How do I overcome this?

emerge --pretend --update --deep world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] media-libs/libungif (is blocking media-libs/giflib-4.1.4)
[ebuild N ] media-libs/giflib-4.1.4

If I unmerge media-libs/libungif my kuickshow does not work.

I don't know what your setup is, but I had a similar problem when trying to install kstars on my computer. Turned out that I had a monolithic install of kde. If you have the same thing then I could see this as a problem since it looks like giflib and libungif might be the same thing (I'm not sure, this is just guess work)

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-378889-highlight-libungif+giflib.html

do this
Code:
emerge --unmerge libungif
revdep-rebuild

then you should be just fine
