I've noticed that the gentoo newsgroup is very inactive. Why do people prefer web-based forums so much? Wouldn't it be easier to simply setup an nntp server. Then you can use any number of clients. You can even avoid having to use a freaking browser. I love slrn.

Gentoo has all types of ways of getting information across, people pick their favourite. Going back to the days of usenet would be stupid. People like the forums because they are easy and they work.

The gentoo.com site and the documentation is quite professional and serious looking. But, frankly, when one arrives at the gentoo forums site, and sees all the the "emoticons" and avatars, and other silly eye candy paraphernalia, the first thought is that you've arrived at a pokemon site. The whole design, the look and feel, is quite frankly childish and off-putting to a professional. Lizard avatars and pics of darth vader . . . need I say more?

that forums site that you dislike so much is one of the reasons why so many people love the forums. They are an integral backbone to the gentoo community and it gives Gentoo an easy looking attitude.

We are not and never want to be eliteists. If you want that go to slackware.

non disputandum de gustibus est. Right? Question of style. Question of approach and image. Question of who your audience is. And, you are probably right. Gentoo is simply not oriented to the professional set. It's purely a hobbyist distro. That being the case, my remarks above are off, since my assumption had been otherwise.

I still say that newsgroup clients are more functional than phpbb, which was the original thread thesis.

Yet people still fail to use all the features that phpBB provides, such as searches.

Dup of this thread.
