Just found another post on this subject, looks like I need to enable it in emerge my emerge --info
F50 ed # emerge info

=================================================================

Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, MAKEOPTS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY

so I can see
ccache version 2.3 [disabled]

how do I enable it?

got it working, missed some bits in make.conf it should read.
F50 ed # cat /etc/make.conf
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built this stage
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example
CFLAGS="-O5 -mtune=powerpc -pipe"
CHOST="powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
USE="gtk gnome qt dlloader kde xfs"
FEATURES="ccache"
CCACHE_DIR="/root/.ccache"
CCACHE_SIZE="1G"
CCACHE_DIR="/var/tmp/ccache"

In now get:

F50 ed # ccache -s
cache hit 4
cache miss 742
called for link 88
compile failed 7
preprocessor error 19
not a C/C++ file 8
autoconf compile/link 148
unsupported compiler option 1
no input file 11
files in cache 1484
cache size 25.0 Mbytes

and emerge --info gives me

Portage 2.0.51.22-r2 (default-linux/ppc/2005.1/ppc, gcc-3.4.4, glibc-2.3.4.20041102-r1, 2.6.13-gentoo-r3RS6000F50 ppc)
