hi all!
i have a gentoo box which occupies 3.9 GB of my space. I know i have many things which i dont use but still they are occupying my precious space (actually i am running short of it very much!). Can any one guide me on how to successively reduce the space. Is not 3.9 GB too much of a space to be occupied ?
I dont even have openoffice like applications.

Regards,
Anshul

You can delete all the files in /usr/portage/distfiles, /var/tmp/portage and /var/tmp/ccache.

You can also delete the contents of /usr/share/doc if you don't use these files

You can unmerge the kernel sources you don't use. Each one uses 200+ megabytes.

Code:
ls /usr/src

you can remove the kernel source code but you will need it back at some stage to update certain pkgs that need to refere to it.

eg alsa , xorg etc.

I would look at the other suggestions above first.

Also look into rsync_excludes , you can vastly reduce the ammount of files in the portage tree, 90% of which you dont need.

Depending on your needs get rid of kde and gnome if you have them , they are mastodent packages. Try xfce4 for example.

I imagine in India the relative cost and availablity of hardware makes it more difficult but couldn't you aquire and old 4G drive somewhere?

Trying to run Gentoo on 3.9G you are going to be constantly cleaning up and chasing space.
