I don't understand what happens: I have a Mac Mini and the sound works perfectly with kernel 2.6.13-gentoo-r3 (and prior versions). As I do it every time I have to upgrade the kernel, I do
cp /usr/src/linux-old/.config /usr/src/linux-new/.config
then go the new kernel source, just do a make menuconfig, exit and compile the kernel.

But, with the new kernel-2.6.14-gentoo-r2, I have no more sound. What's the problem?

If you're using the "alsa-driver" package instead of having alsa in the kernel, you need to remerge it after upgrading the kernel.

By the way, after you compiled the kernel, I'm assuming you copied it to the proper /boot, right? =)

Alsa is in the kernel and everything is installed in the right place.

I have noticed something that is very strange: there is no /dev/dsp and there is no /dev/sound.

If I boot back in kernel-2.6.13-gentoo-r2, I have no more sound.

I have ugraded too alsa-utils, alsa-lib and alsa-headers in the same time. It could be the cause of the problem.

/dev/dsp is an OSS device. Check if you have OSS emulation under ALSA on the kernel config.

Well, the problem is not related to the kernel update.

Now, I can get sound with oss, but alsa still doesn't work. It seems that alsa doesn't work since the upgrade from alsa-utils 1.0.9 to 1.0.10. Can anybody tell me what I must take care of?

I have had (almost) the same problem and the problem was my .asoundrc. the file was all about dmix, but after I deleted the file I had sound and parallel sound output out of the box!

Your message made me full of hope. But I have no $HOME/.asoundrc file. Any other suggestion?

Maybe you have a file "/etc/asound.conf" which serves the same purpose? I've also noticed that with the 1.0.10 release of alsa, dmix is enabled by default. I have no idea whether and/or how to override that, but you could try removing /usr/share/alsa/cards/PMac.conf.
Btw, you can see whether you have alsa by checking /proc/asound/version.

Did you check your kernel messages with dmesg to look for any errors when loading the sound driver?

Thank you for your help! But I can't succeed to get alsa working.

If I remove /usr/share/alsa/cards/PMac.conf and /usr/share/alsa/cards/PMacToonie.conf, I have no more sound (now I have sound with OSS, but I can't get it to work with alsa).

/etc/asoundrc doesn't exist, but I have /etc/asound.state. /proc/asound doesn't exist.

If it can help, here is the output of dmesg:

Have you run alsaconf recently - this fixed my problems last time I recompiled the kernel.

I'm having this same problem, and I also think it's not a problem with the kernel, but with the alsa stuff.

I had a 2.6.15 kernel that could play sound, and I had the same mac mini booting disklessly with a 2.6.16 kernel where it couldn't play sound.

So I had the local disk boot 2.6.15 kernel build a kernel for diskless booting, and upon booting that network-boot 2.6.15 kernel I still had no sound. Its something in the environment and I think that thing is Alsa.

I also tried upgrading to a 2.6.17 kernel and had no luck.

If anyone has had any success with the latest alsa stuff please let me know... this MacMini will be the worst MythTV client ever without sound =(
Also, how can I go back and get even older ebuilds so I can try Alsa-Lib 1.0.9? Is there a program for fetching older ebuilds?

[EDIT]

I just downgraded to Alsa-lib-1.0.9_rc3 and alsa-uitls-1.0.9a --- and sound now works perfectly! I got the ebuild by going to http://sources.gentoo.org/viewcvs.py/gentoo-x86/media-libs/alsa-lib/?hideattic=0

I plan to stay put at Alsa 1.0.9. Sound works on my MacMini now, so now I've got to mod an X-Box to make another Myth Client... Cheers!
