It seems that that particular mirror does not allow anonymous logging in. I would suggest changing your mirrors in /etc/make.conf with the GENTOO_MIRRORS="" line. Until then, you can download the file http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/setiathome/setiathome-3.03.powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu.tar and place it into /usr/portage/distfiles/

You also might try boinc instead. The old setiathome project will stop issuing work units 12/15/05 (setiathome).

Hmm, thanks for the file link, setiathome is chugging away right now. I attempted to emerge boinc and it started to emerge something called wxGTK-2.6.1, even though i use kde and have -gtk and -gnome in make.conf. it started to emerge and then gobbled up all of the space on my hard drive. does boinc really need this package?

Try:
Code:
USE="-X" emerge boinc
That should eliminate the dependency on wxGTK (a fine cross platform GUI SDK 8) ).

P.S. Add "[solved]" to the subject to let people know you found a solution.
