When emerge runs configure and looks for BSD signaling my server reboots.
Example:
emerge ftp
Checking for BSD signal semantics...
Broadcast message from root (tty0) (Fri Nov 18 11:06:47 2005):

The system is going down for reboot NOW!
no
This package needs BSD signal semantics to run.

I do an init 3 to keep the server up. If I were to go into /var/tmp/portage/ftp-0.17-r6/work/netkit-ftp-0.17/ and run ./configure && make install everything is fine and if finds the BSD signal semantics as Yes.

Any ideas? Its quite annoying to have the machine reboot when I try to compile stuff!

There is/was a bug about rebooting on ppc64, but it was a little bit different. So are you running ppc or ppc64? can you post your "emerge --info" output?

I had the same Problem... Go to 'make.conf' and type 'FEATURES="-sandbox -usersandbox"'...
That helps me. I hope that help you, too! :?
