I want to have transparency in KDE with modular Xorg. I have been trying and searching for a lot of time. I have concluded that:

  • nv driver: slow
  • nvidia 7xxx without the "RenderAccel" on: I get transparencies, but it's slow
  • nvidia 7xxx with "RenderAccel": hangs because I have an old graphics card (GeForce2 MX), driver problem
  • nvidia 6629: xorg hangs because doesn't accept the static driver

It seems that modular Xorg doesnt accept the "nvidia_drv.o" driver because it's not a shared library.

So we make it:
Code:

cd /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers
ld -shared --warn-unresolved-symbols -o nvidia_drv.so nvidia_drv.o
rm nvidia_drv.o

Then you have to add this to the "Module" section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to avoid some unresolved symbols.
Code:

Load "int10"
Load "ddc"
Load "ramdac"
Load "fb"

This is the rest of my "Module" section.
Code:

Load "dbe"
Load "glx"
SubSection "extmod"
       Option "omit xfree86-dga"
EndSubSection
Load "type1"
Load "freetype"

You need to have the composite extension enabled:
Code:

Section "Extensions"
     Option "Composite" "true"
EndSection

You need to set some options in the "Device" section:
Code:

Driver "nvidia"
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
Option "RenderAccel" "true"

And thus I'm enjoying the speed of the modular Xorg and the beauty of transparencies :)

I tried what you've got here but X still crashed within a few seconds of starting. So, I've got a couple questions:

Are you using the nvidia driver in portage?
Would you mind posting your use and CFLAG settings, incase that's my problem.

Thanks.

Which graphics card do you have?
Can you post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

I'm using the 1.0.6629-r4 version of nvidia-kernel and 1.0.6629-r7 of nvidia-glx
I can't tell you my USE nor CFLAGS now, because I'm not on the computer where I use Gentoo, but I think they don't matter.
