|On PPC the only real choice for java these days is ibm-jdk-bin. Recently ibm-jdk-bin-1.5_beta1 was put into portage. There are many packages that don't compile with this, but there is a plugin that works with most browsers.
With Konqueror, I installed the jdk and it just worked. Opera won't work with 1.5, needs 1.4. Mozilla I haven't bothered installing as most people use Firefox, but it should be similar.
'cd /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins' Or wherever your firefox plugins directory exists.
'ln -s /opt/ibm-jdk-bin-1.5_beta1/jre/bin/libjavaplugin_oji.so' If you installed the jre, or installed in some other location, use that. Restart Firefox.
To test if java is working try: http://www.opera.com/applets/clock
PS: Here is sun's website. Many of these applets will not work with jdk<1.5
