Hi all,
A little while ago I became the proud owner of a new laptop. My old one, a Gateway Solo 9300 was still a pretty nice machine, though it became a bit to slow for me (650 MHz) and the battery was dead.
Most joyous of all is that my new laptop is a 15-inch hi-res Powerbook. Ever since I saw a picture of the first alu powerbook I was in love with the machine.

At the moment I am really busy with finishing up my Masters and doing my thesis research, so I do not have much time on my hand to study Linux on Powerbook pros and cons. I also need my laptop every day, so installing Gentoo does not fit into my schedule. Too bad, I want to mess around with it so bad!

This xmas holiday I will have time to compile Gentoo onto my laptop. A few question I hope you can help me with:

1. 3d acceleration is still not possible is it? (I heard it would soon be?! Any further info or URL on it?)
2. how is power management, and how long will I be able to run on battery, using GNOME 2.12 or KDE 3.4 (or 5)
3. How long will it take to compile a Stage 2 tarball?
4. How long is the Gnome 2.12 minimal compile time?
5. How long is the KDE 3.4 (or 5) minimal compile time?
6. How is the performance of the two major desktops on the new Powerbook. (I know comparing intel/amd vs. ppc is like comparing apples and oranges, but I have a AMD 1800+ Athlon running on 786 MB RAM with 32MB video, will the Powerbook (1,5Gb RAM, 1,67 GHz, 128 Mb video) be about the same speed? More? Less?)
7. Does GNOME outperform KDE or vise versa?

- I used to use KDE when I started using Linux, than I switched to GNOME 2 years ago because I found KDE’s interface to be overwhelmingly crowded with options, icons, tabs etc. I however say this the other day: http://baghira.sourceforge.net/OS_Clone-en.shtml, which makes me ponder again about which desktop to choose. Will this bagira hack and the finder-like konqueror de-clutter KDE and make it easier on the eye again or not. To find that out I will install KDE on my desktop using Kubuntu and see.

I will leave it at this for now. Hopefully some of you can help answer these questions. If there are any issues, pros, cons that one knows about, I would love to hear about it. Also, why would one advise me to stay with GNOME, or switch back to KDE?

Many thanks in advance. I am looking forward to your replies.

Daniel

P.S. if someone with the same Powerbook has a kernelconfig file for me or a xorg config file. i'd be happy to see it.

It is possible... just do a little search before posting... https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-371472.html

Power management works without problem, with apm emulation too... The duration dipends of the operations you do, but if you install daemons like cpufreqd and pbbuttonsd, you can obtain a total battery time equal to osx duration.

Better to srart with a stage3 (new default one) and then do an emerge system. It take a night.

A night each one... or a little more

Probably your powerbook will be better... the only things that can create problems is the speed of HD (4200 or 5400?)

No...

Good choice, man! I do all of my work on my PB under Linux. I also did my thesis on my PB with Latex - its the perfect machine/OS to do some professional work :-)
