I just got my gentoo comp back up and running after 6 months and i find my skills have some what waned from what they use to be. Also it seems that almost everything on my system is horrible out of date (I like to have things up to there latest versions)

Could anyone tell me how to update my entire gentoo system I know there is a way to do it but I cant seem to remember it.

As root:

Code:
emerge --sync
emerge -Duva world
etc-update

Also, like I do, you can use dispatch-conf instead of etc-update.

I also use emerge -DuvaN world instead of emerge -Duva world (packages recompile with newest USE flags.)

[EDIT] Others beat me to it. :(

If your system is really six months out of date then you'll probably have to add :
Code:
# emerge --sync
# emerge -u portage

...then proceed with the update of "system" and "world", afterwards your probably going to want to down load "emwrap".
Emwrap will definitely keep your system humming along just fine, unfortunately it's not in portage so you will have to d/l and untar it, here's the link:

There's plenty of good info there on how to keep your system up to date  .
