Now i would like to load the driver automatic at boot. Whats the best way to do this?

Thanks for the good work!

^^ This will work just as well for x86 as it does for ppc. The driver itself should work fine on all arches (I know it's been tested on AMD64 and x86). File a bug to get it keyworded for your arch if it works fine for you.

Thanks for the link, I seem to be learning more and more about portage everyday.

Will have to postpone getting the driver working for the mo' as am moving abroad for a new job in a few days, but will get round to trying it out and submitting the bug report as suggested.

Thanks for the response and work on the driver.

got a strange problem:
something turns my AE off after a few minutes.

this morning i did modprobe bcm43xx, ifconfig eth2 up, iwlist eth2 scanning, iwconfig eth2 blah foo.........., watching dmesg until connected,dhclient eth2 (net-misc/dhcp works for me, net-misc/dhcpcd not), vpnc (the wireless here at the TU Berlin are open, but you can't do anything w/o a vpn connection ;)), works.

...for a few minutes, then without a reason:
Code:

Jan 17 09:33:54 [kernel] bcm43xx: Radio turned off

the same thing happened sunday, when I had kismet sniffing at a friend's place
I wondered, why the kismet client gets an EOF every few minutes and first thought it's a prob with kismet, but then I saw eth2 dissapearing from a simple ifconfig without a reason
currently running a 2.6.15-gentoo and used bcm43xx-20060113 and a softmac snapshot from the same date on sunday
this morning I fetched bcm43xx-20060117 and a fresh softmac-snapshot but the problem stayed

right now building 2.6.15-gentoo-r1 and then rebuild softmac & bcm43xx-20060117

oh, btw, the softmac ebuild gives me _many_ errors
Code:

# wc -l /var/log/portage/3646-ieee80211softmac-0.1-r20060105.log
22638 /var/log/portage/3646-ieee80211softmac-0.1-r20060105.log

kay, gonna reboot ;)

EDIT: the problem vanished with the newly build kernel & modules, kismet ran for a couple hours without probs

EDIT2: I now think, there where still multiple "dhclient eth2" in background...
I use dhclient when connecting to the open (but vpn-secured) wireless' at university and forget to kill them later.. it seems, they don't even bother the interface disappearing (rmmod bcmstuff) and try to get the control of the interface, when it reappears :roll:

Hey, did anyone else lose connectivity after upgrading kernel to 2.6.15-gentoo-r1?

I made one change when doing this, namely building-in the ieee80211 and subcomponents (previously had these as modules), but subsequently have gone back to using modules and still have the same problem.

I can set everything correct on the connection, and it is up, but signal is seesawing wildly between 100% and 0% (as seen in KWifimanager). If I ping -c6 a host on my WLAN I'm lucky to get 1 response in 6 tries. Output of iwlist eth1 scanning is similar - sometimes it finds all the local APs, sometimes none.

EDIT: Confirmed, the stability of signal is much better on the previous gentoo-kernel revision (2.6.15-gentoo).

EDIT2: Now it seems to have improved a bit under the new kernel. What did I do different? Umm... I did a unmerge+re-merge of ieee80211softmac and bcm43xx when switching back to the new kernel (last time I just did emerge again, without unmerging first). Maybe this helped?

BTW I refined my auto-AP script (for use in local.start or independently) to make use of the other variables available in /etc/conf.d/wireless. Still no DHCP or per-MAC-address config, but I hope this gives you ideas on how you can do those things if you need'em. Works pretty well now, as long as you have the driver working ;)

Code:
IFACE=eth1

WIFI_CONF_FILE=/etc/conf.d/wireless
. $WIFI_CONF_FILE

# since iwlist scan output is imperfect, we'll try all APs twice
for ITER in ${preferred_aps[*]} ${preferred_aps[*]}; do
        if [ `/sbin/ifconfig |grep -c $IFACE` = 1 ]; then
                /sbin/ifconfig $IFACE down
        fi
        eval "/sbin/ifconfig $IFACE \$config_$ITER up" || echo ifconfig $ITER failed
        eval "/sbin/route add \$routes_$ITER" || echo route failed for $ITER

        if [ `/sbin/iwlist $IFACE scanning |grep -c $ITER` = 0 ]; then
                sleep 1
                if [ `/sbin/iwlist $IFACE scanning |grep -c $ITER` = 0 ]; then
                        echo Cannot see $ITER
                        continue
                fi
        fi

        echo " * Setting wireless ESSID $ITER..."
        /sbin/iwconfig $IFACE essid $ITER || echo Failed setting essid $ITER

   eval "KEY=\`echo \$key_$ITER\`"
   if [ ! "$KEY" = "" ]; then
      echo " * Setting encryption key..."
      /sbin/iwconfig $IFACE key $KEY || echo Failed setting key for $ITER
   fi

   eval "CHNL=\`echo \$channel_$ITER\`"
   if [ ! "$CHNL" = "" ]; then
      echo " * Setting channel..."
      /sbin/iwconfig $IFACE channel $CHNL || echo Failed setting channel for $ITER
   fi

   eval "MODE=\`echo \$mode_$ITER\`"
   if [ ! "$MODE" = "" ]; then
      echo " * Setting mode..."
      /sbin/iwconfig $IFACE mode $MODE || echo Failed setting mode for $ITER
   fi

        eval "echo nameserver \$dns_servers_$ITER >/etc/resolv.conf" || echo failed setting DNS resolver for $ITER
        echo Interface $IFACE configured for ESSID: $ITER
        break

done

I tried to compile bcm43xx-dscape, but it return this error:

The kernel (2.15.1-gentoo-r1) is patched (with patch for vanilla source from ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/bcm43xx/dscape_vanilla/ FILE NAME: patch-2.6.15-ds060102.diff.bz2 )

I've successfull done modprobe rate_control and modprobe 80211 and successfull patched wpa_supplicant.

Sorry for my English..

Hi, maaaannyyyy thanks for the driver, I've compiled on amd64 and my card is
Code:

02:08.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 03)
        Subsystem: Wistron NeWeb Corp. Acer TravelMate 290E WLAN Mini-PCI Card
        Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 64, IRQ 177
        Memory at d0114000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=8K]

compile OK then extract firmware with fwcutter:
Code:

extracting bcm43xx_microcode2.fw ...
extracting bcm43xx_microcode4.fw ...
extracting bcm43xx_microcode5.fw ...
*****: Sorry, it's not posible to extract "bcm43xx_microcode11.fw".
*****: Extracting firmware from an old driver is bad. Choose a more recent one.
*****: Luckily bcm43xx driver doesn't include microcode11 uploads at the moment.
*****: But this can be added in the future...
extracting bcm43xx_pcm4.fw ...
extracting bcm43xx_pcm5.fw ...
extracting bcm43xx_initval01.fw ...

extracting bcm43xx_initval08.fw ...
extracting bcm43xx_initval09.fw ...

then use wcard, many output only one periodic error:

Thanks for everyone that made this driver possible. I have a BCM4306 working with the latest daily snapshot, ieee80211softmac on x86 and I have two questions:

Someone posted proviously about a recurring error:

Code:

bcm43xx: bcm43xx_ram_write val=6e840b00 newval=6e840b00
bcm43xx: bcm43xx_ram_write val=0000d400 newval=0000d400

Is this normal? Is there something I can do configuration-wise or code-wise to fix it?
I've only found one reference on the web to something similar: http://www.mail-archive.com/bcm43xx-dev@lists.berlios.de/msg00342.html

If anyone can point me in a direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, has anyone noticed a lot of latency when any network connection is initiated? I'm guessing it could be due to the XMIT errors, so if anyone has a guess one way or the other, that would be great.

You probably have a newer 0x4318 card, I'm working on figuring out what changes were made to the driver to support those newer cards, support will be spotty until we get that worked out.

Thanks for the reply.

If there is anything I can do to help. let me know. I wouldn't mind doing some coding on the project, though I might need a bit of hand-holding. Perhaps I could implement status led's or something simple....just whatever I can do to help.

It's all working well here, using bcm43xx and softmac from portage, with one exception. There is nothing showing up in /proc/net/wireless. The interface works perfectly, but I am unable to use the wireless plugins for GKrellM because it reads /proc/net/wireless.

nelz:

It's on the TODO list, but there are unfortunately more important things to be worked on right now. (0x4318 chipset support) It should be pretty simple to implement if you'd like to send a patch to the dev team.

OK, so it's not supported yet, and nothing wrong at my end.

I wouldn't have a clue how to fix the code, so I think it's best for all concerned if I don't submit a patch :)

old code ?
old code if you do " hg clone http://softmac.sipsolutions.net/source ".
The new code is http://softmac.sipsolutions.net/softmac-snapshot.tar.bz2 (See http://softmac.sipsolutions.net/)

With new code:

rmmod all module previosly loaded
compile softmac
insmod ieee80211.ko (this replace the kernel module?)

try to recompile bcm43xx drivers (after a svn checkout)

make clean

Hey

You have the wrong directory to the softmac source, try

Code:
SOFTMAC_DIR=/home/atomik/broadcom/softmac/softmac-snapshot/include make

Wow, now it compile!!
Thanks to all for the support!!!!

i've loaded bcm43xx.ko module, without errors..
but softmac have support for WPA-PSK network?

if yes, i do:

ifconfig eth1 up
iwlist eth1 scan
iwconfig eth1 rate 54M
iwconfig eth1 essid "myessid"

but after this, to associate my station to a WPA-PSK network?

No, it should work with SoftMAC too, at least with the patched ieee80211. . There's an ebuild in portage, and read about it at: http://hostap.epitest.fi/wpa_supplicant/

The patches mentioned on the ml are already in the patched ieee80211, but the post includes some tips for using wpa_supplicant, so read about it here:

Is anyone else finding differing performance on ad-hoc versus managed connections?

I typically get a regular signal on managed APs at home and a local public (unencrypted) AP, after pumping my connection script a few times. (See a couple of pages back for the script I'm using.)

However, on the ad-hoc connection I set up at work, I can associate (to the extent that the AP's MAC address and other details appear in iwconfig) but can't get anything over the connection. All these connections were working reliably with ndiswrapper and no configs have changed. The 'problem' AP is a Windows XP box with a Belkin F5D7050 USB 802.11g adapter (using the Ralink rt2500 chipset) on ad-hoc mode with WEP.

As mentioned in earlier posts, the driver I'm using is bcmwl5.sys if that's much relevant.

Anyone else seeing these issues specifically with ad-hoc connections?
