Do the 250106 ebuilds support WPA as standard with wpa_supplicant?

There is no mention in a changelog -> http://www.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/net-wireless/bcm43xx/ChangeLog

Yes, this version does work with wpa_supplicant.

The very latest ebuilds cause all of my attempts to connect to an open network to fail with "Authentication with xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx timed out." Haven't tried with a WPA network yet.

I'm not able to connect with anything, either DHCP or static IP, either unencrypted or WEP. The driver has never been able to do anything but scan for me, and I've tried both 20060105 and 20060125. I'm lost...I hate ndiswrapper but I don't have a choice for the time being.

Thank you sooooooooo much it works !!! :)))))))

You can emerge the 20060125 even if you have the ieee80211 compiled as modules, but the ebuild wont allow it.

I'm curious what people have been doing to get the wireless driver to work. For me, it has never once done anything successfully except scan. Even though it seems like I can associate with access points, I don't believe I actually am, because I am unable to obtain a DHCP address, and also setting a static IP doesn't work either. I'm using vanilla-sources-2.6.15.1, softmac-20060125, and bcm43xx-20060125. I've gotten as far as having it tell me I associated with an access point, but nothing past that.[/code]

I had the dscape version working, so I know that it works, but it was getting a pain to update manually, so I´m trying the softmac version with the latest ebuilds and I get exactly the same as you.

Everything builds and installs fine and dmesg says its connected, but the wpa_supplicant log says not.

These are installed (unpatched);

Same thing for me :(
I set the rate manually to 11m but no result.

softchill:

It's not recommended to have different modules with the same name, I really recommend that you disable the in-kernel ieee80211 completely.

Everyone having connection problems:
Get another card and capture the packets between your AP and the bcm43xx card, if you can do this, I'll take a look at what's going on.

Is the same error i have with wpa_supplicant...

would you post your configuration file and describe all the command you do to connect with wpa_supplicant?

I think that is necessary to modifying /etc/conf.d/net , and insert some thing (for wpa_supplicant)... (but for me doesn't work)

The instruction for get WPA work with softmac and wpa_supplicant missing, why not add it on the first page of this topic?

Thanks to all for the great work!

Right now I'd be happy if I could even use an unsecured AP. Nothing is working, softmac and iwconfig show that it associates (even if I use WEP), but I can't ever actually communicate with anything. Is it possible that the problem lies with softmac and not with the actual driver? Here's a complete log of what happens with the latest baselayout, the latest bcm43xx, and the latest softmac:

#atomik, I´ve made bold the commands I used in the previous post. That is what I did.

You are right, explicit instructions seem to be missing, hence why I posted everything I did, so that I can be corrected if it is wrong :wink:

For me it must be the stack, as very early bcm43xx drivers worked for me with WPA2 with dscape stack ....

Jose, I've happened to notice in my wpa_supplicant logs (when I try to connect to my unsecured networks using wpa_supplicant) that the scan does detect the correct AP, but it says that the AP's operating frequency is "0 MHz". Somehow, I don't think that's supposed to be the case. ;)
Edit: Also see the wpa_supplicant log from above, it has the exact same behavior as mine. The original 20060125 ebuilds worked marvelously, I might add.

Not sure if any of this info will help with getting the newer chips working, but I'm trying to get this working on my new HP laptop with the BCM4318 and here's what's happening.

I'm running the 20060125 ebuilds of bcm43xx and ieee80211softmac
Architecture is AMD64, with firmware cut from a 64 bit driver "BCMWL564.SYS" I actually can't remember where I found the driver.

After ifconfig eth1 up, dmesg gives:
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth1: link is not ready

iwlist eth1 scan returns a scan that shows my AP fine
setting the channel,rate, and AP seems to go fine

then I do dhcpcd eth1, it just hangs there, eventually I get this in dmesg:
SoftMAC: Authentication timed out with xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (the mac address of my ap)

It was working "kinda" with the old ebuilds and ieee80211 in the kernel, but it was very slow, sometimes stopped working altogether and often hung the whole system.

Hmmm, I just tried it with setting the rate at 11 instead of 54 and it seems to be working...
We'll have to see how well.

Shed a little more light on the subject here... I got it to connect to the wireless. BUT, wpa_supplicant connects only for a few seconds before saying "authentication with 00:00:00:00:00:00 timed out." It then disconnects, re-scans, reassociates, and works again for a few more seconds. Rinse and repeat. The reconnection is fast enough that no data is lost, but it does throw off dhcp when trying to use the init script.

On /etc/conf.d/net:

Quote:

modules=( "wpa_supplicant" )
wpa_supplicant_eth1="-Dwext"
wpa_timeout_eth1=60

This not fix the issue... but i think is necessary if you need to give up wifi at boot time..

Hey all!

I have a problem with standby and the bcm driver.
Sometimes when i resume my PowerBook the bcm driver isn't able to resume correctly.
I know that this is a driver problem and the developers of the driver will fix this in the future, but has someone a workaround for this?

Thanks

Greetz

KeyserZero:
I haven't heard any issues with this, can you explain what happens? I can't really help without details.

Everyone else:
The driver is still incomplete. It's a whole lot better to try to get it working with manual configuration, using the Gentoo initscripts or other methods probably will not work (if they do, you're lucky! :) ) You MUST bring the device up ifconfig ethx up before setting any settings.

Using the init script or not doesn't matter, because it's still borked :? I tried it again this afternoon on the exact same network in the exact same location - no dice. *shrug*

Yes, using the three commands;

Quote:

ifconfig eth1 up
iwconfig eth1 rate 11M
wpa_supplicant -ieth1 -Dwext -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -d

gives me the same result as trying the gentoo init scripts, with a suitable delay for the WPA/WPA2 comms to get established ..

edit: I´ve also tried the remaining commands in the first post to no avail. The AP is seen fine, authentication seems ok, but association fails.

edit2: removed ebuilds and now trying latest softmac snapshot and svn bcm43xx versions ....

edit3: Interesting result :? a kernel oops .. will try some more options later.

I can't really help without something to work with, can you capture the transaction between the bcm43xx card failing and the AP? That would help...

Hi

I only have one question... is encryption possible without wpa_supplicant? I'm getting some unknown symbols crypto_free_tfm or something.

I went ahead and downgraded my baselayout to the stable version. Even though the ~x86 version handled wireless properly (bringing up the interface before trying to scan or configure), it was giving me other strange issues, like issuing TERM to all processes during boot (seems to be random, only happened once). I haven't had any luck configuring my wireless interface manually either...it pretty much does the same thing the Gentoo initscripts do. iwconfig says I'm connected to the access point, but I eventually get entries in my /var/log/messages from softmac that says authentication timed out. Is having to bring the interface up before scanning just because the driver is incomplete, or is that the way wireless drivers are supposed to work? With ndiswrapper it doesn't matter, but ndiswrapper isn't really a standard Linux wireless driver, and I've never used anything but ndiswrapper so far. I did get a chance to use fwcutter on the .o driver listed in the #bcm-users channel on irc.freenode.net though. I'm not sure but I think that may be the Linux/MIPS driver from the Linksys router. It didn't give me the error extracting one of the firmware files that I got from my Windows driver. I now have those firmware files in a share directory on my server if I ever need to extract the firmware again.
