I just fixed the problem. eth1 is finally up.
Here's the problem:
Code:
% diff /etc/udev/rules.d/._cfg0000_50-udev.rules /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules | grep firmware
< # Load firmware (not quite yet...)
< # SUBSYSTEM=="firmware", ACTION=="add", RUN+="/lib/udev/firmware_helper"

So I added the firmware line to the current file:
Code:
# echo 'SUBSYSTEM=="firmware", ACTION=="add", RUN+="/lib/udev/firmware_helper"' >> /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules

restarted udevd:
Code:
# killall -1 udevd

and brought the interface up. I'll test the actual association with APs tomorrow.

I guess the moral of the story is to always run etc-update or dispatch-conf after upgrading. :)

Thanks for letting us know what the problem was.

Firmware handling was disabled in the previous version of the config too (it's commented out), so I don't see how it worked for anybody without fixing that.

Update: also none of the dependencies of bcm43xx-fwcutter (pciutils, libusb, usbutils, hotplug) are required to bring the interface up. Firmware is loaded by udev.

I dug into this a little more. udev doesn't usually doesn't manage the firmware uploads, hotplug does. In the latest versions of udev, support for replacing hotplug with udev has been added, so now udev can do it too. So, the only dep listed in bcm43xx-fwcutter is hotplug, which is still required until udev enables fw uploading by default. Makes sense?

Skinkie:
That's caused by a bug in SoftMAC. Your AP is rejecting you because the ShortPreamble flag isn't set in the Capabilities field.
This patch should fix it: http://lists.sipsolutions.net/pipermail/softmac-dev/2006-May/000260.html

Could you (or any of others of course) help me with WPA? I had the ibook G4 working with no encryption, now I went back to WPA, and it works smoothly under OS-X.

I read the man of wpa_supplicant and configured "/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf" with the help of wpa_passphrase but I get this error:

Code:

# wpa_supplicant -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -Dwext -ieth1

Questions:

1) do I miss some kernel modules/libraries/other files?
2) have I used an invalid parameter or so?

Many thanks to whom helps me out with this....

I have a BCM4318 and I get this error when loading the firmware:
Code:
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
firmware_helper[5238]: main: error loading '/lib/firmware/bcm43xx_initval05.fw' for device '/class/firmware/0000:06:02.0' with driver 'bcm43xx'
firmware_helper[5270]: main: error loading '/lib/firmware/bcm43xx_initval06.fw' for device '/class/firmware/0000:06:02.0' with driver 'bcm43xx'
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory

I had everything working with ndiswrapper but I thought I'd try this in the hopes I could get a better connection. The firmware files are there and I've tried cutting them from several different files, including one I used with ndiswrapper - they all give the same error.

Sometimes I can still get it to scan, but it'll only work for about a minute and then it stops showing scan results. Reloading the module makes it work for a few minutes again. Sometimes it'll claim that it's connected, but it doesn't work (it only connects to my neighbour's network which it calls by my ESSID, even though it's NOT my network - I can tell by the MAC address. It can see my network, most of the time anyway, it just acts like it's not there. I have all the other local networks, including the one it tries to connect to, in a blacklist but it seems to be ignoring that...)

Thanks in advance. :)

EDIT: Here's the dmesg output from my latest boot, too. It only gave me an error about _one_ of the files this time, oddly enough - I haven't changed a thing 8O

Is there any way to boost the range? It can't receive my network, bu tI can receive it under OS X. It can sometimes see another network.

What kind of card do you have? It's probably a driver issue we're working on.

Did you try the udev workaround pegas mentioned?

UPDATE: I commented the opensc lines in wpa_supplicant.conf.

Now wpa_supplicant SEEMS to work, wpa_cli/wpa_gui report the card as "associated" but the AP doesn't agree (I can see no traffic nor any computer connected into the AP log window).

I would use DHCP with it but it doesn't work.

Code:

wpa_supplicant now report this:

bind(PF_UNIX): Address already in use

then:

Code:

ioctl[SIOCGIFADDR]: Cannot assign requested address
Trying to associate with {AP MAC} (SSID: '{AP SSID}' freq=0 Mhz)

Associated with {AP MAC}
Authentication with {AP MAC} timed out.
ioctl[SIOCGIFADDR]: Cannot assign requested address

and it goes on repeating the last three lines.

What can I try next?

thanks.

I've got a PCI-E AirPort Extreme card (BCM4310). I'm using PiranhaP.patch.

nibiru:
Are you sure it's giving you a valid address that's not already in use? Are you sure there isn't already an address assigned to the card?

worthawholebean:
Please try the patchset that Stefano Brivio posted to the netdev mailing list: http://www.spinics.net/lists/netdev/msg04819.html I fixed a bunch of things related to PCI-E in the specs and he implemented them. You may need to add your PCI ID as well.

Thanks.

What do you mean by valid address? It was working without encryption. The IP address won't be assigned to the card, not even setting it by hand works. wpa_gui doesn't report any IP.

I've noticed also this: the first time I reboot from OSX the card seems to be in a valid state: the AP will see the ibook and put it into the log. I mean: there's a valid authentication request and also a response by the AP.

But DHCP isn't working. So after some time wpa_supplicant receives a "network down" message, and from now on even if it seems to associate with the AP (according to wpa_gui and wpa_supplicant stdout messages), I suspect the airport is left in an unconsistant state. All I can do is reboot into OSX (yes, not even rebooting into linux will cure the log-vanishing issue).

I'll paste DMESG output asap.

UPDATE: This is the output of DMESG just after boot:

This is somewhat news to me. Notice I removed personal data: {MAC} is indeed the AP MAC.
I could (but I don't think it makes sense at this point) continue with:

Code:

wpa_supplicant -Dwext -i eth1 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

And I would get, in this case:
Code:

bind(PF_UNIX): Address already in use
Associated with ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
Authentication with ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff timed out.
ioctl[SIOCSIWMLME]: Operation not supported
Associated with ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
{REPEATS}

Notice the bad MAC address... it should be -1?
This is the last dmesg:

bcm43xx: set security called
bcm43xx:    .level = 0
bcm43xx:    .enabled = 0
bcm43xx:    .encrypt = 0
bcm43xx: set security called

bcm43xx: set security called
bcm43xx:    .level = 0
bcm43xx:    .enabled = 0
bcm43xx:    .encrypt = 0

I have also tried not to issue "iwconfig essid". In that case, wpa_supp. reports the correct MAC address, says to be associated, but the AP doesn't report it at all, no log show the ibook is trying to connect...

What (if something) can I do next?
[/code]

Just one more info:

I've tried to connect via WEP and it worked flawlessly.

So it is WPA to give troubles...

My router/AP is a DLINK 524, if this may help...

I now switched to the devicescape-stack to get ad-hoc-mode working.
2.6.17rc4 is running fine, compiled with bcm43xx-dscape and ieee80211-dscape.
I get the driver up and running:
Code:
bcm43xx_d80211: 80211 cores initialized
bcm43xx_d80211: Keys cleared

However when trying to set the mode to ad-hoc, I get this:
Code:
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Device or resource busy.

Changing the channel OTOH works fine.

Is wpa_supplicant mandatory even for public access points? I'd just like to try out my wlan-connection without having to check for authentication-issues etc.

(edit) I tried to set the mode before bringing the interface up, which "worked", but now I get the following error in the log:
Code:
wlan0: ieee80211_sta_rx_mgmt: non-STA interface (type=3)

A quick google-tour revealed not much helpful so far...

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 and I am using the piranha and pcie patches, I am able to bring eth1 up, list and associate with an AP... however whenever I run dhcpcd eth1 it never receives a response. I have tried to connect to about 5 different open AP's in my apt area and walked around to make sure I was in range of them as I tried repeatedly.

Here is the result of my lspci

With that new patchset, eth0 isn't even recognized anymore.

worthawholebean:

That's not very helpful. Can you tell us what it says in dmesg?

Scin:
Well, you're most of the way there. By associate, do you mean that is says it associated in the dmesg (with softmac enabled)? If so, there should be no reason why DHCP doesn't work. If you are associated, can you try a static ip and see if that works?

JoseJX: All dmesg says is "bcm43xx driver" or something like that.

I tried browsing through the code, but I couldn't make much sense of it. BCM4310 does not appear to be in the giant table, though.

I really doubt that you actually have a PCI id of 0x4310, since those aren't PCI-E cards. Can you pastebin the output of lspci -vvn | grep -i 14e4? You probably have an 0x4312, stefano didn't include it in his original patch, an update will be available soon

Thanks.

Thanks.

JoseJX: Yes, it makes more sense now (and I should've also looked at emerge -pvt bcm43xx-fwcutter to see that it actually only depends on hotplug, others are dependencies of hotplug itself). I did not know that the way I configured udev was actually a workaround rather than the official way to do this.
I still don't see how it was supposed to work with hotplug. Starting or stopping the service did not do much (all the /etc/init.d/hotplug script does is to check whether CONFIG_HOTPLUG is compiled into the kernel and does not start any daemons).
