Greetings, complete newbie checking in here with some issues during install of the 2005.1 onto a Motorola StarMax (PPC), circa 1998 (yeah, I know it's old, I'd like to put it to some use rather than throwing it out).

I've managed to configure BootX reasonably, and copied a kernel into the Mac System directory, got the video reasonably set. When BooX brings up the LiveCD kernel it goes along merrily for quite a while, detecting devices; at some point I see this:

    HDIO_SET_DMA failed: input/output error

Should I be concerned about this?

Later, it apparently detects my Dayna Communications E/PCI ethernet card correctly, for it loads both the Tulip module and the de2104x module (the Dayna has a DEC 21041 chip on it). If I do an ifconfig right away, it shows both eth0 and lo present, but if I just wait a minute or so without doing anything after I get the root prompt I get this message:

    timeout expired stopping DMA

When this happens I see the solid green activity light on my ethernet switch go dark for this port, and subsequent ifconfig commands only return lo, no eth0. I can bring back to life briefly by typing

    ifconfig eth0 up

But then it reverts back, and gives me the stopping DMA message after a minute.

Googling around for the error phrase it appears that the de2104x driver has some compatibility issues with the 2.6 kernel. Any suggestions on how to proceed? Is there a patched copy of de21041 available somewhere? Should I just keep going, and see if I can get the whole thing installed without a working network connection, then try to compile a driver (from where?)?

Thanks, in advance.

The only way I could overcome this on my PB 3400c (c 1998) was to go back to the 2004.3 install disk, which worked fine. Then generated kernel 2.6.14 including the de2104x driver which now works fine. However when I emerged wireless-tools to try to get my wireless card working it broke dhcp, causing it to fail with the same message. Un-emerging wireless-tools solved that problem too.
