Hello

After using SuSE for a long time i decided to try gentoo. This is my first time intalling it and i ecounter some problems with glibc, but after readin several post i got around it.

I now have a working system (mac mini) which takes me to the console. I followed the intruction on the handbook and i added KDE on the USE part, but i am not sure if this is emerged and installed or if i have to install KDE and xorg once the system is up..

Basically i want to be able to use a GUI...

i do startx and it come back with command not found which tells me that x its not installed or at least not in my path. So any post or guide to guide me through so that i can have a GUI on this gentoo system..?

Thanks

Unless you have explicitly emerge xorg and/or kde, it won't be installed. You should probably take a look at the KDE reference guide:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-config.xml

As for your networking issue, I have no idea without more details. The more details you can provide, the better.

Well as far as the network part.

When the network cable is connected it launches the dhcpcd and it get all the network info from the router, like IP, netmask, dns servers, etc; but it gets there and it seems like it stops (i left it there for at least 15min).

When i unplg the network cable it takes me to the loging console and i see:
INIT: entering runlevel: 3
Starting syslog-ng
Starting eth0
Bringing up eth0
Configuration not set for eth0 - assuming dhcp
dhcp
running dhcpcd <--------- NOTE: since cable is unplugged it continues to boot up
ClassID = Linux 2.6.14-gentoo-r2 ppc
ClientID = XX.XX.XX.XX.XX.XX.XX.XX <------ numbers
Starting local
ERROR: Problem starting needed services.
netmount was not started

Any ideas..?

Thanks

I guess there was a problem with dhcpcd when taking all the defualt info.

The problem was fixed once i logged in and typed:
dhcpcd etho -s IP_ADD -G GATE_IP

It would get stuck if i did "dhcpcd eth0" so i had to gtrl+c to stop it..

I havent restarted the unit so i dont know if it will get stuc on the same part..

That's really not normal. Perhaps you missed something in your kernel configuration?

Ok i ve put aside the network problem since i can just retype the network config after every reboot. ( will solve later)

Now after i emerged kdebase and xorg ( also did Xorgautoconfig).

after i ran Xorautoconfig i did startx and it took me to a very lite GUI which is TWM so i did echo "exec startkde" > /home/test/.xinitrc and logged out and logged back in as test and i see the cursor flash and then the screen takes me back to the console, but this time the fonts and everything it messed up...

Any ideas...?
