Ok I have tried to install Gentoo for about the 7th time. I have got it really close and I am not giving up. I am a fast learner, besides I have never used linux before. Yeah yeah yeah, i know you are about to tell me to go to an easier distro. Sorry i like a challenge.

The processor is a Intell Centreno 1.8 ghz. I gig of mem. 40 gig HD

Since I am doing a new install I should do all 3 stages correct?

I guess where I am getting hung up is setting the USE flags, CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS. Any more dummy information for me to read up on?

Thank you so much guys for your help! :)

If you are using doing a stage 3 install, then all the information you need to add to the make.conf file is your USE flags and MAKEOPTS="-jx" where x is the number of physical processors you have +1. Since you have a centrino, your best bet would be to use the pentium4 packages.

On the USE flags, to begin with just start out with things you know you will use. Such as when I start fresh I only start out with the window manager i'm going to use and the libraries it uses and any hardware i know i have such as my CDR+DVD drive.

Code:
USE="gtk2 gnome cdr dvd"

This is my current /etc/make.conf file, the only thing i added to CFLAGS is the "-pipe":
Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4 -pipe"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
USE="gtk2 -kde qt firefox mp3 dvd cdr -gnome -mozilla ldap madwifi mono win32codecs nsplugin"
VIDEO_CARDS="radeon"

Please correct me if any of my information is wrong.

I believed for a centrino cpu, the march should be "pentium3" for gcc 3.3

My suggestion: Get a stage 3, install it, update it to gcc 3.4, set march to "pentium-m".

A nice guide for upgrading to gcc 3.4: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-345229.html

Also look at this guide too: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-231170.html

I followed both guides, and it improves on my laptop a lot...Good luck.

So I do not have to do a Stage 1 install? See that is where I am confused. Where do I start. Everyone says do a Stage 3 install. Thank you all kindly for the info. :)

As I was looking over the Gentoo Handbook it seems that stage 1 and 2 installs are not supported anymore.

Quote:
Make sure you download a stage3 tarball - installations using a stage1 or stage2 tarball are not supported anymore.

stage1/2 not being supported any more is weird since gentoo built it's name on being compiled from the ground up and being fast. maybe they just figured it's not worth the extra support hassle and that people who do stage 1 & 2 should know what they are doing or else they should just do stage 3.
