Hi,

I'm currently setting up one our inhouse xserve's with gentoo linux on it.. The install all went fine and the system runs and does everything as i would expect from gentoo.

The problem I'm having though, is to do the install, i put in a radeon 9200 video card into the system, of which, i need to now replace with a broadcom ethernet network card. Whenever i try to swap the two (video for ethernet, so no video card, 4 ethernet cards), the system refeuses to start up.

Since i have no video card, i don't have any idea of what it could be hanging up on.

I know its not starting up because the fans go full blast after about 5 mins of powering on, and i can't access the machine via ssh.

When its running mac osx without a video card, it works great.

Has anyone had any experence installing gentoo on an xserve, then removing the video card? If so, what actions did you take to ensure it would start up properly.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I tried to compile frambuffer out of the kernel and it hasn't helped.

Could it have something to do with yaboot? Do i need to pass a flag or something? i almost seems like its not even reaching the kernel stage before it stops.

Thanks again.

Sorry, can't offer any real help. Don't have access to any xserves. However, I would suggest that you try and setup yaboot in the serial console mode. To get you started http://ozlabs.org/pipermail/linuxppc-dev/2003-March/014928.html

This way you will at least get a feedback where the system is getting stuck. Some information on serial consoles, albeit for PCs/LEAF/syslinux is here

Good luck.
