After a fresh emerge sync and emerge -UupvtD world today. I see:

[ebuild U ] net-print/cups-1.1.23-r4 [1.1.23-r1] -cjk -gnutls +nls +pam -samba -slp +ssl 0 kB
[ebuild N ] app-text/xpdf-3.01-r3 +X -motif 585 kB
[ebuild N ] media-libs/t1lib-5.0.2 +X -doc 1,657 kB

Why does cups suddenly need xpdf?

Noticed this, too. Setting the USE flags to -X and -motif got rid the the xorg requirement at least. I absolutely don't want X installed on my server - there is no reason for this.

This change happened a while ago.

xpdf has a tool called pdftops (iirc) that cups uses.

Would it not be better to pull pdftops out of each to a separate package that is a dependancy of each? Oh well, I'll just have to install xpdf

Code:
echo "app-text/xpdf -X -motif" >> /etc/portage/package.use

This actually compiles xpdf without xpdf :-)

EDITED and fixed :-)

Should that be
Code:
echo "app-text/xpdf -X" >> /etc/portage/package.use

?

FWIW I added -motif to that line as well
Code:
echo "app-text/xpdf -X -motif" >> /etc/portage/package.use

Glad I stumbled across this. I'd unmerged xpdf the other day, and hadn't gotten around to figuring out what insisted on having it.

Fixed my post above, sorry for the distraction mistake.

also added -motif, but i strongly recommend to use -motif in make.conf, since motif is really outdated.
