PostPosted: Fri Dec 16, 2005 6:17 pm    Post subject: CUPS wants X but i not Reply with quote

doing my update batch i stumbled across a problem. for some reason the new cups ( net-print/cups-1.1.23-r4 ) always forces the portage to compile the entire X although i set -X use flag in make.conf .

Quote:
[ebuild N ] x11-base/opengl-update-2.2.1 0 kB
[ebuild N ] x11-apps/ttmkfdir-3.0.9-r3 0 kB
[ebuild N ] x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r6 -3dfx -3dnow +bitmap-fonts -cjk -debug -dlloader -dmx -doc -font-server -insecure-drivers +ipv6 -minimal -mmx -nls -nocxx +opengl +pam -sdk -sse -static +truetype-fonts +type1-fonts (-uclibc) -xprint +xv 196 kB
[ebuild N ] virtual/x11-6.8 0 kB
[ebuild N ] x11-terms/xterm-204 -Xaw3d -toolbar +truetype -unicode 698 kB
[ebuild N ] x11-libs/openmotif-2.2.3-r3 0 kB
[ebuild N ] app-text/xpdf-3.01-r3 -X +motif 585 kB
[ebuild U ] net-print/cups-1.1.23-r4 [1.1.23-r1] -cjk -gnutls -nls* +pam -samba* -slp +ssl 8,501 kB

now this can not be the solution as i have a server without any X installed and do not want the big fat X system on my server where i have no use for it. is there a way to force cups to forget about X or do i really have to mask it out?

EDIT: the same problem exists with media-libs/netpbm-10.30-r1. emerging the old one it doesn't ask for X but this version forces me compile with X.

Just to summarize it all, add -motif to your USE flags.

i tried this to no avail... maybe netpbm has some other dep trashing all. any ideas how i could find out what additional use-flag could cause the problem?

Use emerge with --tree to show the dependency path.

I have no idea what xterm is doing in there.

However, your problem is the opengl USE flag on jasper; it pulls in virtual/opengl, which xorg-x11 supplies.

adding -opengl to the USE flag did solve the problem. no idea what opengl has lost though in this dep chaine but at last i get things updated without X dragged into play.

I add this to my /etc/portage/package.mask on my headless machines, to make sure that X won't get emerged:

Code:
x11-base/xorg-x11

This also seems to give more immediate feedback on the particular package which is trying to pull this in - it's a bit of a "kill-or-cure" though :)

Already stated.
