I am working on installing Gentoo (~x86) on my desktop and ran into quite a mess when I emerged system.

The ebuild that failed was gcc-config-1.3.12-r4 and I believe what has happened is that gcc-3.3.6 (with gcc-3.4.something being compiled even before that) was compiled before it and it broke so then the ebuilds that were emerged after that, also failed. Python is also broken.

Error when doing gcc --version and error from failed ebuild
Code:
gcc-config error: gcc wrapper: Unable to determine executable
             CTARTGET=i686-pc-linux-gnu
             exec=gcc

Error when trying to use the emerge command
Code:
/usr/bin/python: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I had to unmask eseletc-compiler-2.0.0_rc1-r1 to be able to emerge system, I don't know if this has anything to do with the current problem or not. I did a google search on the gcc error and didn't come up with anything and I know the python error is related to the gcc error also!

To fix the python error, grab a copy of libstdc++.so.5 from a LiveCD, another system, etc., then remerge python.

While that would get python back up and running, I couldn't re-emerge it, since gcc doesn't work. I need to get the gcc error fixed first!

Ok I seem to have got the problem solved, but I don't understand how. First I did a
Code:
/usr/bin/gcc-config 1
and it returned something about a gcc spec error then I did
Code:
gcc-config 1
and it switched over to the 3.3.6 profile without a problem. Now I have portage and gcc working again! So who knows? I am just glad the problem is solved!

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads in favour of this FAQ: Error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5.
