Hi to everybody

This is the second iBook G4 I own, I already installed and configured perfectly Gentoo on both machines but I think this one has some hardware problem with the CDROM. Anyway, I post this message to see if somebody experienced the same problem, and to find an alternative solution before taking my machine to Apple service.

Well, the CDROM drive is apparently the same model:

Code:

hdc: MATSHITACD-RW CW-8124, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdc: ATAPI 24X DVD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, (U)DMA

since the first time, the drive started to make very much noise when inserting a CD or a DVD, the older machine was not so noisy, but the drive worked. Some CDs didn't work also on MacOSX, and here comes the big trouble.
If I leave the iBook on for many hours (compiling or downloading from P2P networks) the CDROM drive "disappears", doesn't mount, doesn't read, and even if there is not any media in the drive, it sounds like reading the disc, every 2 minutes. I launch a

Code:
 cdrecord -scanbus dev=ATA

and it returns:

Code:
 AIA' 'D-R  C-8124  ' 'B0D' NON CCS Removable CD-ROM

the CDROM line is fu**ed up, it lacks of many characters, I've never seen this kind of troubles on x86 machines. If I reboot the system with MacOSX, the drive also "disappeared", and if I try to eject the media nothing happens. The "seeking disc noise" is there, every 2 minutes. If I try to eject from OpenFirmware, it shows an error and it doesn't eject the media.

Shall I go to the Apple service directly or can I do something else? Tried to Google but nothing, also tried to see if there is some firmware update.

Thanks to you all in advance

Sounds like a hardware issue.
