I'm sure this question has been asked many times before, even possibly here. I just want to know from the Linux (any distro) users...Will linux, in your opinion, ever become the dominant desktop operating system as opposed to Windows?

Personally, I would have to say no. This is because I work in a local computer repair shop and I know how Joe Public thinks when it comes to computers......"Click and Go, If not, it's broken". The main problem I think with Linux is the choice. The fact that there are so many different kernel versions, so many desktop managers, so many different programs to do the one thing. Windows got one thing right - centralisation. Everything in Windows is made by the same company. There is also the ease of use factor. Since Windows only runs on (mainly) one architecture, x86, Joe Public can go into a shop, buy a CD, check the specs and know it will run on his / her system. With linux, you need to check kernel version, distrobution, architecture etc.
My last arguement is the installation of programs. First of all, as a bonified Windows user, I must say Gentoo kicks serious ass with the magical 'emerge' command, I love it heartily but spare a thought for other distrobutions with their own package managers -
Red Hat / Fedora, command based rpm handler. Joe Public - "Command prompt / shell, whazzat? What's this typing m'larky all about?".
SuSE has a nice graphical rpm handler but it bails out and hides under the desk whenever dependencies are out of date or not present. Cant get them yourself? Tough.
Older distros - ./configure, make, make install - this one put me off linux for a long LONG time.
Windows - setup.exe - click click click done.

Let's hear your comments too

davidfowler2000,

Joe Public doesn't care about the operating system - he just wants to USE his computer.
The OS is just there to support the applications the users wants to run and should be totally invisible to users.

Microsoft owes its insatlled base to the lack of copy protection in Windows 3.x.
Users at work took pirated copies home for their own PCs, where their childern grew up with it.
Those children now at work, have known windows for a long time. Some of them are in a position to specifiy it too.

Barring a disaster, there is to much installed inertia for Joe Public to change.
What sort of disaster ?
A virus or worm that makes windows unusable for long enough to make uses want to learn something else or Microsoft going broke.

The learning is in the applications though, not the operating systesms.
