I installed a gentoo system on my pc a year ago and after a while I stopped using it (I have dualboot with windows). So now I want to start using it again and I am now trying to update my system. The problem is that when I run emerge sync after syncing a lot of packages it stops leaving me with this:

Number of files: 132791
Number of files transferred: 2170
Total file size: 108788023 bytes
Total transferred file size: 4662152 bytes
Literal data: 4662152 bytes
Matched data: 0 bytes
File list size: 3015583
Total bytes written: 43581
Total bytes read: 7776280

wrote 43581 bytes read 7776280 bytes 31092.89 bytes/sec
total size is 108788023 speedup is 13.91

>>> Updating Portage cache... /!!! Cannot resolve a virtual package name to an ebuild.
!!! This is a bug, please report it. (virtual/libstdc++-3.3)

And when I try to emerge anything I get

!!! ARCH is not set... Are you missing the /etc/make.profile symlink?
!!! Is the symlink correct? Is your portage tree complete?

You should try to download a portage tarball from a server ( in Germany as example: http://mirrors.sec.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/gentoo/snapshots/portage-latest.tar.bz2 ) and unpack it by tar -xvjf portage-latest.tar.bz2 -C /usr
Try that, then you can emerge --update --deep --newuse world
