hey!

i read trough following threads:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-396718-highlight-yaboot.html?sid=3119f87c11e1d65d2a9471eb8f844192
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-392788-highlight-panic.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-383609-highlight-panic.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-376200.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-376744.html

and I got following error
Code:
VFS: Cannot open root device "hda4" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root =" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

I recognised that I should - and I did - select a few more options in my kernel configuration file (ck-sources-2.6.14)
Code:

CONFIG_PARTITION_ADVANCED=y

# CONFIG_LDM_PARTITION is not set
# CONFIG_SGI_PARTITION is not set
# CONFIG_ULTRIX_PARTITION is not set

and

# CONFIG_IDE_ARM is not set
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA=y
# CONFIG_IDEDMA_IVB is not set
CONFIG_IDEDMA_AUTO=y
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_HD is not set

and my yaboot.conf
Code:
boot=/dev/hda2
device=/pci@f2000000/pci-bridge@d/mac-io@7/ata-4@1f000/disk@0:
partition=4
timeout=30
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
mkofboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot
image=/boot/kernel-ck-2.6.14
label=gentoo
read-only

and on booting kernel recognises hda and enables DMA 100 Support

but still shows that VFS Error

please help, working on it since a week.

problem does not exist anymore

I simply run
Code:
make defconfig

and the machine started without any errors, though its kernel isnt that little.

so I just have to negotiate something in kernels configuration, looking forward to minimize kernels size and number of modules.
I dont like modules, thats just a personal preference.

thanks for supporting in cases of errors, gentoo forum is very nice.
