I am trying to install blender for the first time and not getting much joy.

Code:
n of 'FTFont' with no type
source/blender/ftfont/intern/FTF_TTFont.h:115: error: expected ';' before '*' token
source/blender/ftfont/intern/FTF_TTFont.h:117: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of 'FTFont' with no type
source/blender/ftfont/intern/FTF_TTFont.h:117: error: expected ';' before '*' token
source/blender/ftfont/intern/FTF_TTFont.h:118: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of 'FTFont' with no type
source/blender/ftfont/intern/FTF_TTFont.h:118: error: expected ';' before '*' token
source/blender/ftfont/intern/FTF_TTFont.h:119: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of 'FTFont' with no type
source/blender/ftfont/intern/FTF_TTFont.h:119: error: expected ';' before '*' token
scons: *** [/usr/portage/tmp/portage/blender-2.37a/work/build/linux2/source/blender/ftfont/intern/FTF_Api.o] Error 1

gcc-3.4 gives same error as 4.1 here. Also tried masked and unmasked blender , same breakage across the board.

BTW the two dependancies build w/o probs.

I had no problems to compile blender-2.36-r1 with gcc-3.4.4-r1. If you dont need the 2.37 features, you may try that.

Just tried it again. No problems.

Maybe something with your CFLAGS?

Your freetype is too new. Blender doesn't play well with the 2.1 freetype. See https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-414371.html
