df is bringing up 100% usage but i just uninstalled kde and all respective packages with emerge unmerge!

then i tried to be smart and unmask some gnome2 packages in package.mask, tried emerging the beta, and it complained about no space available after some part of compiling. what do I do?

just a quick tip: clean up /usr/portage/distfiles after compiling the packages, this brings another few hundred megs ;) (does not solve your actual problem, but might help by giving a little time)

Also, you can:

Code:
rm -rf /var/tmp/portage/*

This should save even more space :)

Are you sure you've cleaned up all the packages? Older versions may specifically have to be unmerged (see Tips'n'Tricks).

no, because you still might want to recompile an already installed package for various reasons, then you will need at least the sources in /usr/portage/distfiles :)
