going for another installation of gentoo on a pals notebook i suddenly thought i am too tired to read a simple page but after verifying it is clear: i have not dreamed!

in the hand is writte suddenly:

Stellen Sie sicher, dass Sie ein stage3 Archiv herunterladen. Installationen mit einem stage1 oder stage2 Archiv werden nicht länger unterstützt.

( in english: stage1 and stage2 will no more be supported )

wtf is going on? will stage1 and stage2 vanish forever? wazzup?

Where did you read that?

btw: Downloading stage3 and then doing the following:
Code:
cd /usr/portage/scripts
sh ./bootstrap.sh
emerge -e world
would be the same as going from stage1 -> stage2 -> stage3

cheers/Gruss aus ZH

Make sure you download a stage3 tarball - installations using a stage1 or stage2 tarball are not supported anymore.

Well... the stage1, stage2, stage3 archives are still there (for example on ftp://mirror.switch.ch/mirror/gentoo/releases/x86/2005.1-r1/stages/x86/)

It is the first time I read, that stage1/stage2 will not be supported any more. Maybe someone from the Gentoo team can clarify this?

cheers

damn i'm angry... really fking angry...

i switched from LFS to gentoo as it took some burden off my shoulders compiling my own system and now i have to use precompiled stuff?!?!

damn i'm angry... this destroyed anything gentoo is standing for. i can not understand nor agree with this decision. gentoo is about choices... otherwise you could start sticking a micro-soft sticker on gentoo... made to be non-free, non-decisive.

Have you read through the thread I linked in my previous post? I believe it helps clarifying this issue and that it addresses your comments.
I won't reproduce the arguments or restart the discussion here, but if you read it carefully, you'll notice that you can still use Stage1 if you want and that you can still tweak evertything to your liking using a Srage3 tarball. Finally, to recall a very important point in my view, if you start with a Stage1 tarball, don't customize the bootstrap.sh and use the default values for /etc/make.conf, you'll end up in the exact same system that you get when extracting a Stage3 tarball.

Moved to duplicate threads because this has already been discussed in the post mentioned.
