I know people have gotten the trackpad to work on the post october 2005 powerbooks, but I can't find a thread which relates to it. I have seen some patches on the web, but I never got them to work, or I was doing something wrong.
I've installed appletouch 0.08. The module loads, but gpm doesn't work. Mouse doesn't work in X windows either with the synaptics driver and proper code in xorg.conf.
I've also installed atp-0.05. I'm not sure if appletouch replaced atp, or they work together. The documentation for this driver is too vague.

The trackpad patch is here:

You may need to change the USB id in the patch to match your machine. That patch specifies a 0x0215 USB id, where my powerbook was a 0x214.

I have some basic notes on my powerbook5,8 on my wiki, including some synaptic settings which seem to work quite nicely with the trackpad:
