When I decided to install gentoo for the first time I used the following for my make.conf

Code:

#CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
#CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -msse2"
#USE="xinerama"

Today I was reading up on the subject and I found this was recommended for gcc 3.44 or higher

Code:

#CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium-m -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
#CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

And the same thing with pentium 3 for older versions. So is using i686 hurting my performance? Because everything has compiled with it. I have tried pentium-m and most things will no longer compile. I assume because they want to use and old version of gcc... Is their a way to force using the compatible version of gcc?

Me and a co-worker are using the following cflags on pentium m 755 processors.

CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium-m -mtune=pentium-m -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -mmmx -msse -msse2 -fno-delayed-branch -fcaller-saves -freorder-blocks -freorder-functions -falign-jumps -finline-functions -frename-registers -fweb -fno-trapping-math -falign-functions=64"

CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

The only problem we've really had was with Gimp, and only with his. (identical laptops). We traced it down to a cflag no longer listed above.

Currently using
sys-devel/gcc-3.4.4-r1

What you have shouldn't slow you down that much, if it would even be noticable so long as you are using gcc 3.4.4 or greater. I don't think some of the newer pentium-m cflags work for anything less than this version of GCC.
