I'm new to gentoo, linux, xemacs, vim, programming...I'm new. I installed XEmacs and I plan on using it as my primary text editor. I would like there to be color when using XEmacs (I think this is called syntax hilighting?). So far I have just been using it to configure FVWM. I plan on programming with java and other languages like html, python, etc How do I go about bringing some color into the Editor?

According to the xemacs FAQ at http://theory.uwinnipeg.ca/gnu/xemacs/xemacs-faq_toc.html
Quote:

Q5.0.3: How do I get `More' Syntax Highlighting on by default?

Use the following code in your `init.el'/`.emacs':

Code:
(setq-default font-lock-maximum-decoration t)

See also Syntax Highlighting from the Options menu. Remember to save options.

You need to use font-lock minor modes for the various languages you'll be using. Someone just mentioned how to turn it on in your .emacs. You can also tinker with the some of the finer settings with the Customize menu. I'd stick with the defaults, though.

I think you'll probably want to use color-theme.el as well. Since it's installed by default with gentoo's fsf-emacs package, I assume it's there for xemacs as well. In any case, put something like this in your .emacs:
Code:

(require 'color-theme)
(color-theme-sitaramv-solaris)
