Im really embarrased by what im about to say, but my python was misbehaving so I ran:

emerge --unmerge python

and to my shock and horror i cant use emerge since it is built on python.

Does anyone know how to reinstall emerge without rebuilding the whole machine.

Is this related with a python update? Have you tried to run python-update? :)

You might be able to get your system working again by using one of these portage rescue tarballs.

EDIT :
The instructions should be located on your computer at /usr/portage/sys-apps/portage/files/README.RESCUE
