I am attempting to run scheme. I did not use portage to install. Instead, I used a tar.gz file from the internet. I extracted its contents in /usr/local. When I enter
Code:
scheme

at the command prompt, I receive the following error:
Code:
bash: /usr/local/bin/scheme: cannot execute binary file

I have since run
Code:
file /usr/local/bin/scheme

which returns
Code:
/usr/local/bin/scheme: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped

I noticed the word "Intel". Since I am running ppc, is this where my problem lies? Is there a way to get this file to work?

I'm not sure if you're joking, but yes, this is an Intel binary. It will not run natively on PowerPC, they're completely different architectures. You could setup an x86 install with qemu, but that's going to be very slow.

You do understand the difference between Intel-compatible and PPC hardware, right? It's not just a pretty exterior. The processors use a completely different instruction set. Code compiled for one absolutely will not work on another. It's like speaking a different language.

If you have really been using Gentoo/PPC for 2 years like your signature claims, you should really know better. Very few binaries you find out on the internet will be built to run on Linux/PPC. They will typically be compiled for the main architecture for a particular operating system.

Also, don't lie. If you were really joking, you wouldn't have posted to begin with.

My signature makes no such claim. It simply says that gentoo was installed. The root word "use" is not in my signature. But thanks agaffney.
