I am trying to get gtkpbbuttons to work from startup. I created a ~/.xsession with the following contents:
Code:
/usr/bin/gtkpbbuttons -t Crystal -d

Once the computer boots. I am able to adjust the brightness settings but there is no gtkpbbuttons feedback. I am able to run gtkpbbuttons from the command line but not from startup. Is my .xsession not even being recognized?

The ~/.xsession file is only read when you start up the X session with the startx command. If you use GNOME, I recommend that you use Desktop -> Preferences -> Sessions -> Startup Programs. If you use KDE, I'm sure there's a similar way, but I don't know wich.

IIRC ~/.xinitrc is read when you do an 'startx' and the ~/.xsession is read when logging in with xdm. I'm not sure if kdm and gdm read this file.

Sodki and corsair, your responses are conflicting. I am using xdm for login. I tried both ~/.xinitrc and ~/.xsession. Neither gives a result.

I was wrong about .xsession being initialized by startx. Which desktop environment do you use? GNOME, KDE or other?

For fvwm2 you can add the following to your ~/.fvwm2rc file

Code:

AddToFunc InitFunction
+ I Exec gtkpbbuttons -d --theme=MacOSX

Thank you. I used the code:
Code:
+ I Exec exec gtkpbbuttons -t Crystal -d

and it worked. I had a feeling it could be done through fvwm, I'm inexperienced with the fvwm config file. I'm learning though and it is turning out to be a nice desktop environment.
