Anyone here have anything positive/negative to report on the following:

1) Gentoo on a G4 cube.
2) Gentoo on a G4 cube with a powerforce47 or sonnet CPU upgrade
3) Video card upgrades on G4 cube

Thanks... looking for this kind of stuff. I have a G4 Cube/450 with 128MB RAM and OS 10.3.x installed. I am wanting to play with Gentoo on it, but wanting to know if it is fine as is or what upgrades are possible. If I can upgrade to dual G4/1.5 and Radeon graphics, this may become my new main workstation.

it may not be the smae arch but I run an amd64 athlon FX-55 with 512megs of ram and never use more than about 200 when useing xfce4 with firefox, thunderbird, 3-4 consoles,aMSN,xmms, gftp all open at the same time so I think that for moderate use 128 should be fine, maybe upgrade to 256 if you find yourself useing some swap. as far as gentoo is concernd it would just be a normal computer. :D

Just wondering about things like mplayer, codecs, DVD, etc. I have no frame of reference when comparing PPC hardware to Intel. Is a G4/450 like a PIII/1GHz?

I can't speak to the speed comparison but as far as software goes, mplayer works great on PPC. However, you can't use the win32 codecs, so you can't watch newer WMVs. Mplayer will play more WMVs than xine, which make it better on PPC. Just about anything else will play on either mplayer or xine.

You can't use the proprietary graphics card drivers.

About the only other thing you will miss is Flash.

Does GPLFLash or any other alternative flash library work on PPC?
