This is part of the vte package pulled in when you install gnome-terminal. It is launched when you launch a terminal and is used for logging. Problem is there is a bug with the process which does not close it after the terminal window is closed. After a week I had 12 processes running and could not kill it without using really ugly measures.

I googled a little and came up with a way of disabling gnome-pty-helper and thought I would share it with everyone. Su into root and run this command:

Code:
chmod 644 /usr/libexec/gnome-pty-helper

No more runaway processes. Enjoy.

Thanks, I had this same problem. Only thing was, I usually have a lot of opened terminals, so in about 3 days i had 25 processes of this :(
Hope Gnome 2.14 will solve this :P

Btw, you can kill them easily with:
$ killall -9 gnome-pty-helper

finally!
I had a look a while ago trying to figure out what this process was doing and why it never exited and didn't really come up with an answer. I'll give this a try. This nasty program has also made it's way onto my debian setup. I don't use gnome, just xfce. In both gentoo and debian it has still snuck on.

edit: turns out xfce4's terminal app depends on it. it's getting pretty tough to keep a gnome/kde free system. maybe i should give in to the evil
