I've spent the last week trying to perfect my gentoo install on my 800mhz G3, and for the most part Im in love with it..... its just the lil tweaks and ironing outs that are causing me grief. Im running fluxbox and liking it alot, but to the point.

xdm is being a pain, Ive been playing with it off in on as I've emerged and compiled my apps, I have it loaded at the default runlevel, have it set right in rc.conf, but am not sure if I have to make any edits to xdm-config or if it should work straight out of the box. After boot has completed the screen flickers 3 times slowly like its trying to load the login manager and then goes to the typical system cmd login.

xdm.log

I hate to be one to promote double posting.... but...

Try posting in the PPC section, you'll probably have more luck.

Or better yet, have a mod move the post.

I won't double post, but I did pm 2 mods about a possible move, so we'll see what they decide.... and thanx for the response.... its atleast helpful in pointing me in the right direction

also I puruse my other logs for anything relevant, Ive been going over the forums for a couple days looking for a related problem no success as of yet, and also I did some google searches on the subject and with the xdm pid errors.

Thanks again for any help and if Im just too much of a noob for my own good and the answer is plain as day, flame the crap outta me (and then tell me the answer :D )

I can't move the post because I'm only a moderator in the PPC section, but your problem is almost certainly that you don't have UNIX sockets enabled. Instead of looking for other things that are missing as well, it would be a good idea for you to back up your current kernel config, perform a "make defconfig" in your kernel source root, then "make menuconfig" to tweak your kernel. "make defconfig" will set proper defaults and should get you running.

Good luck!

you're sexy in a way you'll never know..... I just got through updating and compiling the 2.6.15 and to be honest I may have forgotten to do that when I went through the .config, thanks for responding Ill recompile and report back....Im almost certain I forgot that.

Again Im quite the noob..... I shouldnt drink and compile kernels.... I should have learned that last time.

well hmmm unless Im completely missing something thats not appearing to be it either.....

I'll my post my .config

here's the bit about the UNIX sockets I believe

Code:

# Networking
#
CONFIG_NET=y

#
# Networking options
#
CONFIG_PACKET=y
# CONFIG_PACKET_MMAP is not set
CONFIG_UNIX=y

but I may be wrong so here's the whole thing

http://www.lastcallpdx.com/files/config2_6_15

rc.conf
Code:

# /etc/rc.conf: Global startup script configuration settings

# UNICODE specifies whether you want to have UNICODE support in the console.
# If you set to yes, please make sure to set a UNICODE aware CONSOLEFONT and
# KEYMAP in the /etc/conf.d/consolefont and /etc/conf.d/keymaps config files.

UNICODE="yes"

# Set EDITOR to your preferred editor.
# You may use something other than what is listed here.

#EDITOR="/bin/nano"
EDITOR="/usr/bin/vim"
#EDITOR="/usr/bin/emacs"

# What display manager do you use ?  [ xdm | gdm | kdm | entrance ]
DISPLAYMANAGER="xdm"

# XSESSION is a new variable to control what window manager to start
# default with X if run with xdm, startx or xinit.  The default behavior
# is to look in /etc/X11/Sessions/ and run the script in matching the
# value that XSESSION is set to.  The support scripts are smart enough to
# look in all bin directories if it cant find a match in /etc/X11/Sessions/,
# so setting it to "enlightenment" can also work.  This is basically used
# as a way for the system admin to configure a default system wide WM,
# allthough it will work if the user export XSESSION in his .bash_profile, etc.
#
# NOTE:  1) this behaviour is overridden when a ~/.xinitrc exists, and startx
#           is called.
#        2) even if ~/.xsession exists, if XSESSION can be resolved, it will
#           be executed rather than ~/.xsession, else KDM breaks ...
#
# Defaults depending on what you install currently include:
#
# Gnome - will start gnome-session
# kde-<version> - will start startkde (ex: kde-3.0.2)
# Xsession - will start a terminal and a few other nice apps

XSESSION="fluxbox"
