Hello,

I can't boot gentoo's 2005.1 liveCD

- Here's what i know about my G3 black and white tower :

Code:

  300 mhz powerPC processor
Heathrow IDE controller (?) as said by the CRUX PPC liveCD i tryed (crux's kernel doesnt detect the hard drive)
  5 GB of harddrive space
a CDRom device which seems to work perfectly
As said by the OpenFirmware's screen, that G3  has been released in 1998
Mac OS X is installed for the moment, but i want to replace it with gentoo
  openFirmware 3.1.0

- Heres what i tried :

Code:

-------------------------------------
at openFirmware 3.1.0 prompt  (Apple + Alt + O + F)

" boot cd:,"(5C)"(5C)yaboot" evaluate

-------------------------------------

I had to enter those (5C), this is the only way ive found in order to type 2 backslashes with my swiss french keyboard.
Then i get the "boot:" yaboot commandline, pressing enter outputs this error message after loading the kernel :

Kernel panic : cannot mount VFS on unknown block device  (0,1)

i tried many things like entering : ppc32 hda=1,1,1 as said for powerbooks in the gentoo PPC faq, i thought it would work for that g3 b&w, but no way it refuses to boot, and i dunno what to put as kernel parameters so the liveCD boots correctly.

I really can't use the BootX option, since i dont have any copy of macOS 9 or 8, just osX installed and it takes like 15 min to boot lol

Thanks for any help

Do you know the history of the machine? From what I can tell, OldWorld beige machines are OF version 2.4 or 2.0.x. Version 3.x should be NewWorld. Yaboot only works with NewWorld.

How far did you get with CRUX?

Well i have to correct something, because of my poor english (i am french), i considered my apple g3 as a g3 beige, but its a g3 Black and White, with openFirmware 3.1.0 .

- mac os X works perfectly good on this machine, except its way too slow since its a 300 mhz g3 black and white
- CRUX ppc boots with the openFirmware workaround (boot cd:,\\yaboot) , but dmesg ¦ less doesnt says or detects anything about the hard drive, i only have /dev/ide/host0/bus0/tun0/cd , and /dev/hda is a symlink to that place. I dont have any hdb, shouldn't hda be the main hard drive ? and hdb the cdrom on x86 arch ? Maybe this crux problem has something to do with the ultra ata controller (well i think, it is written "ultra ata" just below the HDD IDE1 plug on the motherboard)
- Gentoo PPC boots with openfirmware workaround but crashes at kernel load, with an error message like "kernel panic, cannot mount VFS filesystem : cannot mount fs on unknown block(0,1)" , i tried as a workaround something like this at yaboot prompt :

Code:

boot: ppc32 root=/dev/cdroms/cdrom0

but no success, still the same error

Also the hard drive is a regular E-IDE (i guess), 5 gb IBM desktar

thanks for help

I'm pretty sure you're the same person I spoke to on IRC, but the issue is most likely that the module for your CD drive isn't a module that is autoloaded. I suggested that you swap the drives' IDE cables and see if it boots then.

My problem was just about :

1) the SDRam memory i put in this machine was old and senile
2) the HDD cable was completely dead, which is why the HDD couldn't get detected at kernel boot

Thanks for help, i will think about that next time
