I know it's a very naive question, but has someone ever tried to install Gentoo from OSX? At least up to chroot it should work. My major concern is that the gcc binaries coming with the tarball might require something the BSD kernel does not offer (as you might have guessed already, I'm not a programmer).

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, which wouldn't surprise me - it's difficult to search for such a topic.

Out of curiosity, what do you mean "install Gentoo from OSX"?

Standard way of installing that I know of is to boot from one of the Gentoo Universal or Minimal install discs. After you boot to those CDs, when you get to the point that you can type into a terminal, you are already in a linux environment and the operating system that is already sitting on the hard drive matters very little to the system at that point.

You need to figure out whether you are overwriting the OSX install or going to make it a dual-boot system. If you are overwriting, it won't matter what was on the drive previously once you format the drive again. If you are dual-booting, you just need the extra space and the existing OS still doesn't matter. You need to follow the manual from there and it should guide you through the rest of the install process.

I think a more important question would be: Do you have a PowerPC (PPC) architecture Mac or one of the new x86 architecture Macs?

The answer will make a big difference as to which image you need to download and burn to CD for yourself.
Once you figure out which type of architecture you have, go to the Gentoo Linux Documentation -- Gentoo 2005.1 Handbook page and select the handbook for your architecture from there.

Have fun and remember the forums are always here to help out :)

There's also the Gentoo/OSX project if he actually meant adding portage to OSX. :)

I'm sorry for being so general. Fink was among the first things I installed when I got my PowerBook (coming from the x86 linux camp). And please don't remind me of the existance of those dual core Macbooks linear, because they use my machine for the baseline in the benchmarks on the apple site ;)

I'm really wondering if it's possible to install Gentoo utilizing OSX, just like installing Gentoo with the help of a Knoppix disk. It would be extremely convenient for me, because I could still use my normal system while the compiler runs. Afterall there are many tools coming with OSX (or being available for it) which are needed for a Gentoo install: Bash, http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsx/ for mounting ext2/3, tar, chroot...

So, just to make this as clear as possible, let me reformulate my question: Is it possible to perform the steps necessary for a Gentoo installation using OSX as a "install disc"?
