What was this called?

You can convert a distro to Gentoo. But I can't remember what to search for.

It's where you download an image of portage, extract and start converting.

I'm interested in seeing if it would be possible to have the best of both worlds.

As an example you could dual boot Gentoo and Ubuntu and run programs across from each. That's a simple example, I believe there could be a way to do it on the same filesystem, perhaps using /etc/fstab, perhaps using chroot.
