Emerge stops updating cache at 51% while doing "emerge --sync"

updated Portage to portage-2.0.53

then tried to sync portage tree again, still having the same problem.

The system is working alot with the harddrive at this state. I think I read something about this a while ago, but can't find it in the forum any more.

How long have you let it sit there at 51 % to see if it will continue on? I have waited at points for upwards of 12 minutes at times and it eventually completed.

This also happens to me. But it doesn't stop at 51%, it just is too slow and takes a lot of time stuck on 51% and 52%, and I mean a LOOOT of time on an athlon64 3400+

what do you have specified in terms of rsync mirrors?

please post
$emerge --info

maybe you just need to try a different mirror.

you can use mirrorselect to accomplish this
from http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=6
In order to download source code quickly it is recommended to select a fast mirror. Portage will look in your make.conf file for the GENTOO_MIRRORS variable and use the mirrors listed therein. You can surf to our mirror list and search for a mirror (or mirrors) close to you (as those are most frequently the fastest ones), but we provide a nice tool called mirrorselect which provides you with a nice interface to select the mirrors you want.

Code:
Code Listing 1: Using mirrorselect for the GENTOO_MIRRORS variable

# mirrorselect -i -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf

Warning: Do not select any IPv6 mirrors. Our stages currently do not support IPv6.

A second important setting is the SYNC setting in make.conf. This variable contains the rsync server you want to use when updating your Portage tree (the collection of ebuilds, scripts containing all the information Portage needs to download and install software). Although you can manually enter a SYNC server for yourself, mirrorselect can ease that operation for you:
Code:

Code Listing 2: Selecting an rsync mirror using mirrorselect

# mirrorselect -i -r -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf

After running mirrorselect it is adviseable to double-check the settings in /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf ! [/url]

I am not 100 % sure, but I think the mirror has nothing to do with this? Updating portage cache happens locally after the sync -
