:( I have no Network connection at home. Therefore I have downloaded 2 cd from the site at work and installed gentoo from the first CD.
However when I try to install KDE or GNOME from the 2nd CD it is always tries to connect to internet and download the updates.
I looked and searched through out t this Forum and tried every possible suggested solution to prevent downloading process but it still tries to connect to internet.

Is there any other way to install KDE from the package CD?

Hardware info

P3 750 MHZ
256 RAM
20 GIG IDE HDD
ATI 32M

Gentoo 4.2

Pls. Help. :?

You're going to have to mask the updated version in /etc/portage/package.mask so portage doesn't try to grad the updated versions.
(Look in the Gentoo DOCS section for a great lesson on package masking)

Also make sure to use the monolithic KDE ebuilds, not the split ebuilds or the entries you will have to make in /etc/portage/package.keywords will be hundreds of entries instead of about 10.

Edit: Here is the guide: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=3

Been ages since I used the LiveCD, so can you post the kde version on the CD and also the version it is trying to download.
(Then I can give you an appropriate package.mask entries.)

Just use the -pv and it won't download, but it will tell you the versions it is going to use.

Edit: Here is the important part from the above docs:
Code:
The package.mask file

When you don't want Portage to take a certain package or a specific version of a package into account you can mask it yourself by adding an appropriate line to /etc/portage/package.mask.

For instance, if you don't want Portage to install newer kernel sources than gentoo-sources-2.6.8.1, you add the following line to package.mask:

Code Listing 5: /etc/portage/package.mask example
  >sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.8.1
