How do I switch over from blackdown java to ibm java. Can I get rid of everything blackdown? Upon completion of emerge'ing ibm java and with the existance of a text editor like vim, do I have the tools necessary to begin programming with java?

Also, what is the difference between jde and jdk? I want to start learning to write simple java programs. Which do I need?

I will take that first statement as a question, answer:
Code:
emerge -aCD blackdown-jdk
emerge -a ibm-jdk-bin
etc-update
env-update

From your system, why not?

Unless you get the (presently masked) jre.

If by jde you mean jre, the jre lacks things that the jdk has, for instance, a compiler.

To start writing and running your own java programs, get a jdk.

Two unrequested suggestions:
  1. Look into ant (dev-java/ant) as soon as you start making java projects consisting of multiple source files.
  2. Get the API documentation bundle (java-sdk-docs).

For a bit more details a "jre" is a java runtime engine (I think), and "jdk" a
java developement kit. A jdk includes a jre. If you want to do any developement
in java go for the jdk. The jre is just for running java programs
