i have installed Gentoo using the 2005.1 universal cd, and now i'm trying to install KDE from the 2005.1 package CD (which is version 3.4.1).

I have accidentally modified the USE variables (inside /etc/make.conf) according to the 2005.1 handbook manual and now it looks like that on the 2005.1 handbook:
Code:

#USE="-gtk -gnome qt kde dvd alsa cdr"

then i tried to install KDE (with that edited USE variable):
Code:

#export PKGDIR="/mnt/cdrom"
#USE="bindist" emerge --usepkg kde

and it looks like the portage still tries to fetch from the net:
Code:

>>> downloading from ftp://ftp.ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.4.1/src/kdebase-3.4.1.tar.bz2
Resolving ftp.kde.org ... failed : Temporary failure in name resolution
[ and other name resolution failure from other hosts since i haven't got internet access with gentoo ]
!!! couldn't download kdebase-3.4.1.tar.bz2. Aborting.

i also tried other options with the emerge command such as --usepkgonly and still no result.
could someone help me?
thank you very much!

Just comment out your USE variable in your make.conf, and do emerge -k kde*...

thank you, but that didn't work.
it still output the same message that it tries to connect to the net and download the package
maybe the USE variable doesn't really affect this?
or should i recompile the kernel after the modification of make.conf?

i really want to try just using the network but my eth card is the troublesome marvell yukon card. lol.

thanks in advance.
