I picked up an ibook 500 from a friend and decided (as it only has a 10g HD) that I wanted to run Gentoo on it only (i will not be dual-booting OSX, i already have a powerbook G4 for that).

Basically above all I'm interested if anyone has the same model and has successfully installed Gentoo on it with Airport wireless working and udio and whatnot, and the steps they took to get there. Currently I have gentoo installed and running but I still need to get connectivity to my Airport home network (to connect to my airport base station with encryption) and would like to set it up to be able to connect to other wireless access points around town (these would have no encryption). I've not yet really begun too much to mess with the ALSA audio or the pbbuttonsd settings (which i'd like to get together as well).

I've worked on and off with Linux installations for a few years so i'm not completely new to all of this, but I definitely am when it comes to PPC. M knowledge of Linux is functional yet fairly minimal.

I've been searching and looking through various articles on the forums or on the net and all of it has become a bit of a headache, so I'd really like to know if anyone has a model like this up and running and if so how they got there. I really just need it for wireless internet access and email/word processing.

If you need any outputs or anything just let me know and i'll post them ASAP, or if you have any links that are especially useful for someone with extreme ADD (who gets distracted with many *.example files and whatnot in seconds) please let me know.

Thankya

- Ashe

The iBook 500 only supports 40bit(64bit) WEP with it's Orinoco based Airport card, a combination of the PPC FAQ and the Wireless guide will help to get it configured:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml#airport
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?part=4&chap=4

For ALSA take a look at the PPC FAQ again:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml#sound

And for pbbuttonsd and other laptop related programs, take a look at this entry in the PPC FAQ:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml#laptoppkgs

Above all, if you don't upgrade hard disk, the space would be so small for dual booting environment.
I think, alternative way might be that you choose the portage on mac os x.

I have exactly the same hardware than you, I can post or send you my .config for the 2.6.14r5 ppc gentoo-sources.
btw, I don't have the airport device.

I have the same hardware, it is enough for a KDE install or am I better off running something smaller in terms of WM/DE?
