I am trying to update my old Gentoo system for the first time in almost two years, and I seem to be stuck in a catch 22.

Following the kernel update guide, it says to update the world first, which I started, but when it gets to "glibc-2.3.5.r2", it fails because I do not have a kernel of 2.6.6 or higher.

So, I try to skip ahead in the kernel guide and try to emerge "gentoo-sources", but it also has "glibc" as a dependency.

I cant update glibc without kernel 2.6.6 without gentoo-sources without glibc !!!!!!

So many things have changed with the kernel, gcc, portage, EVERYTHING.
How do I get to the next step?

Code:
 * Warning! Gentoo's GLIBC with NPTL enabled now behaves like the
 * glibc from almost every other distribution out there. This means
 * that glibc is compiled -twice-, once with linuxthreads and once
 * with nptl. The NPTL version is installed to lib/tls and is still
 * used by default. If you do not need nor want the linuxthreads
 * fallback, you can disable this behavior by adding nptlonly to
 * USE to save yourself some compile time.
>>> Unpacking source...

 * Checking gcc for __thread support ... yes
 * Checking kernel version (>=2.6.6) ... no

 * You need a kernel of at least version 2.6.6
 * for NPTL support!

well, I was able to go a few steps more, but along the way something blew up, and now my reiser partitions will not fsck, and it seems all is lost. Moving from an old kernel to the new is such a difficult task that I reccommend people back up what you can and then do a fresh install.

Thats what I am going to do.
