I installed gentoo and have done an emerge kdebase-startkde
My use flags are "-gtk -gnome kde qt hal arts"

DO i really have to install so many packages to just install gaim? Or is there a way out

emerge -p gaim

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Gaim has a number of USE flags, and most require various dependencies. Do "emerge -vp gaim" to see them.

I don't think using -gtk will stop gtk stuff from getting installed. It's pretty much what Gaim is made of. But for the most minimal install try this, as root:
Code:
echo "net-im/gaim -cjk -eds -krb4 -nas -nls -perl -silc -spell -tcltk" >> /etc/portage/package.use
emerge -va gaim

I can't account for what kind of experience Gaim will give you with all that stuff turned off, but it should cut back on the dependencies a bit.

eds is "evolution data server". That should be what's responsible for pulling in so much GNOME stuff.

YA u r right, disabling eds gives me following. Way less packages than the original one.
Can you tell me what eds does?
Can i do without eds support?
