I've got bootX on this Wallstreet, and have the ppc32 kernel from the Universal LiveCD set up.

When I boot, I get the error:

VFS: Cannot open root device "<NULL>" or unknown-block(8,1)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,1)

I've added the root=/linuxrc boot options, but it doesn't look like it's wirking.

This is my first Mac, but I've used Gentoo for quite some time now.

Thanks

2005.1 doesn't work on OW machines due to a few kernel issues. Please use 2005.0 instead or wait for 2006.0.

Sorry. :(

I made a 2005.0 CD, and when I try it, I get the EXACT same error message..

Now what?

Well, it would be helpful if you explained exactly what you're passing to BootX for kernel arguments.

I've tried nothing, which gets to the same place.

I've tried "rw init=/linuxrc cdroot video=atyfb:1024x768@75"

I've tried "rw init=/linuxrc looptye=squashfs video=atyfb:1024x768@75"

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?part=1&chap=2#doc_chap3
Look at the instructions for booting with BootX.

I tried the command line as stated in the link you gave me, but now the error says:

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)

I'm ready to throw this stupid Powerbook in the trash!

Driver for the ram disk is missing I think. Check your kernel configuration.

Probably not, he's just trying to boot the livecd afaik. It would be helpful to have the few lines before the error message so we know exactly where it was dying, but since he's probably already thrown it away... :p

I fingered out the problem.

I added nodevfs to the bootX command line, and everything came up normally!

Thank you all for your replies!

I may need more help as I start getting the system built.
