It's just a 60M livecd used for pulling down the sources for installation, who cares if it is a recent livecd or not?

Does it really matter what version of Gentoo you install? Can't you just update any or all of Gentoo using emerge? I thought "version" number and "release" designation were irrelevant when speaking of Gentoo.

Or is there something I'm missing?

Don't panic, when 2006.0 is ready you'll be able to point your /etc/make.profile symlink to it and update your system to get fully updated. In fact the profile's already there, so if you're desperate you can use it. No need to wait for those pesky live install cd's :)

The version of the install CDs only matters for compatibility issues (new hardware is often supported in updates). I suggest you go read up on Gentoo before asking silly questions ;) (and definitely before trying to install it)

With Gentoo you will always end up using the latest versions available. There will be no difference at all if you start now with 2005.1 instead of 2006.0. Your system will end up being identical in both cases. So there is no point in waiting 2006.0.
