Hi all,
I tried gentoo as my first linux dist. a couple of years ago. Ubuntu (good but not for me) and Vectorlinux (SOHO is excellent) followed. This was all on my P3. I gave that rig away to a computerless freind al a Ubuntu as I have a good Mac workstation. I have found that I miss Linux - It's very good for getting work done. OS X is too distracting for one. I would like to try Gentoo again - of the three flavours I tried it's my favourite. Mmmm... Gentoo.

I'm downloading the iso as I write this and thought it a good time to ask a few questions:

1. I would like to run a basic LAMP setup. Anyone have problems with this on PPC? How about XAMPP from Apache Freinds?

2. My PPC rig is a 1999 AGP Sawtooth upgraded with a Powerlogix Powerforce47 dual 1.7Ghz. I did a forum search and didn't come across any notes of incompatability. Anyone here know of problems with this CPU board and Gentoo?

3. I own Flash, Photoshop and a few others for OS X. Is there a way (much like with WINE) where I cun run an OS X app while the machine is booted in Linux? This would be handy!

4. Is direct rendering problematic? I have an ATI Radeon 9000 pro that loves to pump Enemy Territory through it circuits.

Thanks for the help!!
DH

just found mac-on-linux. don't know much about it other than it's a "virtual machine" that will run OS X. Cool! Development seems to have halted on it and Tiger compatibility seems iffy.

a little update...

1. Should work fine
2. The upgrade CPU should work perfectly fine
3. Not really, but MOL is your best option, it'll let you run OSX at near native speeds on top of Linux
4. There is no ET for Linux/PPC, but 3D acceleration is supported on the Radeon 9000 with the open drivers.

As for MOL supporting Tiger, the version in portage right now runs Tiger just as well as any other version of OSX. The original author of MOL is no longer working on the project and we do not have access to his website, so we can't update it.

I installed Gentoo on my G4 1.25G MDD about a month ago and I've been really impressed. However, as you're asking about possible problems I'll mention the problems I've had with sound.

Although many users appear to get on board sound and ALSA working without problems, a significant number don't on the PPC. I've got round this by installing a Sound Blaster Live! which works great, but it has no OS X driver so it's not ideal. If you do want to dual boot without having to swap leads about, maybe an M-Audio card would be a good if not slightly pricey option.
